It is just a few doors away from another Korean restaurant, Daorae so yup, if you know that place, its just down the same street. I heard about the reasonable set lunch they were dishing out since years ago but didn’t really try it out until recently. The set lunch comes with a selection of main dishes with rice, soup, some water melon slices, the unlimited refills of side dishes (banchans) and a cup of barley drink. Anyway, I gave it a try and it turned out pretty well! RM15~RM20 depending on what you’d select from the list.

Let’s start with the banchan. [more like a eat-all-you-can banchan ]

Spinach Banchan – Somewhat cold and dry, pretty old spinach used. Not sure if they were meant to be like that, preferred the other dishes over this. Great source of fibre though!

Gyeran Mari – This is a korean version of omelet with some stuffing in it, carrots and all. Refilled probably around 4-5 times. I love eggs so I would definitely love this. =P . They are eggs!

Myeolchi Bokkeum- These are fried anchovies topped with some fried peanuts. Another all time favorite; had like 3-4 refills of this dish. Great source of calcium and protein!

French beans oh french beans. Wasn’t oily and tasted well.

Ahh! A wonderland of banchans. Don’t they look happy together waiting to be eaten?

They had mashed potatoes as well. It was good, same goes to the french beans ( had a ~3 time refill each). Both tasted good. Among the 5 dishes I personally disliked the spinach but the other 4 tasted great. The banchan selections are rotated based on the chefs liking though. Based on my previous trip here there weren’t any mash potatoes served but was substituted by some pan-fried sausages instead.

So we’re done with the side dishes, what’s next? The mains. Portions were huge.

Here’s one of the dishes ordered, some hot plate beef.

There were loads of mushrooms in it together with the beef. Yeah, it was nice. Probably wouldn’t be up to par of those beef experts but then it is still meat and was good enough for me to chow down!

The next dish was an octopus dish. Tasted somewhat like kimchi-fried octopus + vegetables.

The octopus was fresh, didn’t have any fishy smell with it. If it weren’t, it was probably camofludged by the taste of the kimchi-ness. There’s a pork version of this and I prefer the pork dish over this. Cheaper and tasted better.

Next! You’d be served with a slice of watermelon and a cup of barley dessert to fill u even further.

The food came out piping hot and service was excellent. They’d greet u right from the moment you step foot at the premises all the way till you leave the place. I guess they would even lick your shoes, upon request =D.

At prices starting from RM15 – RM20 nett, this is a steal for people who can gnash though all the side dishes requesting for more like there’s no tomorrow.

So how would you do some photography about cereals like the above?

1st, grab some cereals, pour them into a round bowl. I used some oat clusters with slices of dehydrated strawberries. Quite healthy I presume?

OOPS! Censored off that naked photo of mine from the spoon =p.

Tadaa~ you have your 1st photo.

Then, pour some milk into the bowl of cereals. Yeah, I spilt some milk there. No point crying over spilt milk haha!

<fb:like href='http://yltan.com/blog/lim-ko-pi-old-town-ipoh/' send='true' layout='standard' show_faces='true' width='450' height='65' action='like' colorscheme='light' font='lucida+grande'></fb:like>
So finally, I made my way to Lim Ko Pi in the old town of Ipoh. I’ve known of its existence since last year but couldn’t get the chance to give this place a visit.

Heard of various reviews from the locals so I decided to give it a try. Lim Ko Pi actually means drink coffee in Hokkien!

Greeting you would be the strong red color presence of the shop along Hugh Low Street, you won’t miss it. Inside would be the great olden days interior with two outdoor sections for those who wanna have an outdoor experience. No shelters here. Rain or shine, you would be exposed.

Well, my experience here was quite a disappointment though.

We were seated towards the back of the restaurant and maybe because of that, it took us 5-10 minutes before someone actually came to take our orders.

The only drink that was ordered, white coffee kau. Tasted almost similar to the hainanese-style coffee and came with a small piece of yau char kwai. As you can see, there’s no steam in this photo.. Yup, it was not served hot. Let’s Lim Ko Pi haha.

Then came the roti bakar. I’d prefer it to be toasted a little longer as it didn’t really taste as if it was toasted at all. The bread could be better as well, a little stale. Luckily I only ordered one.

The next thing I ordered was the vegetable pau. Alright this one tasted okay though it was a little pricey at RM1.60 each. Nevertheless, if only it was a little less salty it would be good.

The worst has yet to come, the main dish, drunken chicken noodles. Initially I ordered one bowl with mee and bee hoon mixed together. When it arrived, it had only bee hoon in it. Then, I ordered another bowl with the order and the same request, this time it took them 30mins+ to deliver that bowl of noodles and again they made the same mistake, just bee hoon in it. Both did not have what I requested for and to make matters worse, the noodles were not served hot when they arrived. It was just slightly warm. Urgh. Taste wise, still alright. Add in a little more wine and I’ll go olala~ .

Then it was the pricing. The same bowl of noodles had 2 different pricing , one at RM6.50 another at RM5.00. Gave me a headache figuring out why one would cost more than the other. Perhaps anyone could explain why here?

We gave our feedback to the owner and she apologized for the mistakes done and we were complimented with some lemon meringue tarts. Those tasted great though. Here’s a photo of it.

Overall, the ambiance of the shop was done well, portraying the olden days environment, I liked that. However, improvements should be done on the food quality and be placed on the top priority at the moment. Just a walk down the street would bring me to a wider range of hawkers selling almost anything with a cheaper price and still taste better than Lim Ko Pi. Would I go again? Maybe, maybe not. Not till they fix those errors.

Mbuji Cafe at Tropicana City Mall, SS2. This place serves well, coffee.

Located right in the middle of the shopping mall, it would be weird if you did not notice them there. Mbuji was supposedly Mountain Buji in Africa and the beans used in the coffee originates from there.

I didn’t order coffee here though. Had the Vienna Chocolate.

The taste of chocolate was heavy and a bit sweet. Good for those who love sugar =D. Topping it with loads of cream, this is a definite fattening drink!

Here’s the latte – coffee topped with steamed milk and froth.

I’ve haven’t been a hardcore fan of coffee but then looking at the place, it was quite a comfy place to sit and have a chat or read a book (as you can see, I did.). I don’t really know what’s good coffee and what’s not good. To me if it tastes good to my taste-buds then its good! =D

There’s a shop called Meng Kee Char Siew which serves your typical chicken / char siew rice. However, the char siew at this place tastes much better than those of the ordinary shops. It was so called the best char siew around town but I personally find it to be above average, not the best but among the good ones.

They start selling at 9am till their supply finishes, head on before 12pm as the crowd would approach during office lunch hours and you might not get a seat there.

So here it is, the Meng Kee Famous Char Siew. Haha.

Lighting is a little off here, but yeah, here it is. The Char Siew. It is pretty oily and only proceed reading if you don’t care about it. You could opt for the fatty parts or leaner meat. Your choice. I requested for a mix between the fatty ones and the leaner parts.

Here’s the rice, fattening again as well. I guess they are called the oily rice. Anyway tastes great. Haha.

A portion of this comes with a plate of rice, a bowl of soup, the Char Siew and some salty sauce for the char siew.

Total cost: RM7. Mine had additional char siew in it. The normal portion wasn’t enough for me. A little higher priced than the norm, but definitely tastes better. Give a try if you are around that area.

There’s a restaurant in Sungai Way which I think serves better char siew than this. I’ll blog about it someday.

<fb:like href='http://yltan.com/blog/j-tean-kitchen-sstwo-mall-pj/' send='true' layout='standard' show_faces='true' width='450' height='65' action='like' colorscheme='light' font='lucida+grande'></fb:like>
I’ve heard a couple of good comments about this place at SS Two Mall serving this somewhat unique dish. J Tean Kitchen is a restaurant which serves fusion food. What I mean here is a combination of Bak Kut Teh flavor in a western style pork burger. The restaurant serves many other Chinese dishes as well but I went there for the J Tean Porky Burger. Yes it was porky-licious =D

Here’s the Bak Kut Teh pork burger. Priced at RM16.90 each.

Looks a little dry here? It certainly ain’t dry when u start biting the meat off. It was simply juicy with the taste of herbs and all the good stuff. Sandwiching the burger patty isn’t your ordinary buns but rather with man tou’s deep fried to perfection. It gives a little crunch on the outside yet remaining soft and fluffy in the inside. Besides that, the presentation was great as well. The portion was HUGE for a local restaurant. I felt that this was the way restaurants here should serve their food. Just to my liking.

Pushing the top aside, we’ll have a closer look of what’s inside of it. 3 MAGICALLY thin slices of cucumber. It’s amazing on how thin they could slice them . Below the burger patty is another few slices of tomatoes, the generous amount of diced onions and garlic. Perhaps it was done to camouflage the smell of pork (if there is any).

The potato wedges, tasted like.. erm wedges. Haha you would have to request for some chilli sauce if you’d like some.

Complimenting this was the bubble milk tea drink. Hmm, this isn’t on the menu. It was presented specially for us. hahaha, sorry guys, you would have to order other stuff on the menu.

The drink wasn’t dilute and was good as well. =)

Affordably priced and wonderfully tasty. I enjoyed every single bit of the burger. J Tean Kitchen is really the place to go if you wanna have a great porky meal. They have other stuff too, not only this if you do not fancy burgers.

It’s located in SS2 Mall. Parking is still free at the moment, so this makes it even better right? =)

p/s: Perhaps if you’d mention you came from yltan.com, they would serve you better?

This is the 4th time the event is held right here in Putrajaya, Malaysia and its still rocking the Malaysian public! Without fail, this yearly event would cause a massive jam in Putrajaya area starting from 5-6 a.m right up till 12 a.m midnight. One of the contributor is of course, ME! Headed over to Putrajaya at 7 a.m. to watch these balloons light up and balloon away and here are some pics! Of course, click for a slightly larger image. I know you wanna have a larger image =p. *perasan* This is a bandwidth killer post. So proceed with caution.=D

Vibrant colors eh? Hot air balloons are 99% of the time photogenic. LOL

One of the many many hot air balloons fired up was this massive TuneTalk Sim Card hot air balloon. All I can say is that this balloon is humongous! Length wise when its deflated, looks even larger than my house. Okay perhaps I live in a small house but then, you get the idea.

Yup, there were para-motors here and there. =D weee.. looks fun. If only I could try one day.

Lonely chap over here. I forgot his name already. Sigh. Memang lonely.

Flame on~

Here’s Felix the cat. Originating from Vietnam, this cat somehow went missing and landed somewhere near Precinct 18 the other day frightening several motorists.

Here’s another huge balloon from the United States of America! This was one of the two largest hot air balloons featured on that day.

Here’s the 2nd balloon featured by the US team. A birthday cake hot air balloon. Happy 4th Birthday!! Another giant here.

So I went around photographing avoiding the hugeeeee crowd at the night glow session. It was crazy! I wonder if anyone fainted at that area. You could hardly breathe in there. So off I went to find for a suitable sweet spot to frame my fireworks session and sure enough, the event ended with large booms~ =D.

Take 1

Take 2

The Putrajaya International Hot Air Balloon Fiesta 2012 is a great event held here in Malaysia. If you have been here before, well it might not be that fun anymore to go for another time but if you are a first timer, hell yeah!~ .

Here’s a place in Bangkok to have a great buffet at a crazy price . Maison Chin @ Chin’s Place. You may or may have not heard before of this place, it’s a restaurant which only opens for lunch and tea on specific days. This place won a number of awards, one of them being among the top restaurants in Bangkok recently. You can read the whole loooooong list of achievements on their website. I’m not gonna crap about that here. So let’s begin the food photo fest =D

Here’s a section where you can grab most of the food offered. Note that the food variety served here is rather limited compared to here in Malaysia, “the more the merrier” concept. I wasn’t in any way “discouraged” here. The food was great =D, maybe I was reaally really reaallly hungry at that time. Skipped breakfast for this .

Hmmm~ The roasted pork was delicious =D. Crispy and juicy!

I didn’t really try the spaghetti. So, not really sure how it tasted like.

Had the sashimis replenished twice by the chef =D . A few plates of these.

Here’s the bomb! The chocolate banana cakes were superb! Doesn’t really look good in picture, TOO HEAVY! I added additional slices of bananas to it and topped them with chocolate sauce. OK, being greedy here again, I actually walloped 5~7 slices of this leaving just the crumbs for Reng Kwan to settle for. The whole cake had about 8 slices..

As soon as the chocolate banana cake were all gone, ( INTO MY STOMACH AHAHHA) , They replaced it with this chocolate cake, NO MORE CHOCOLATE BANANA T.T . This was good as well but it was only around 70~80% of the chocolate banana. Too bad for those who didn’t get to try. Greedy TYL was there =D. Oh did I mention they had cheese cakes and fruit flan cake as well? I had 1-2 slices of it only, wasn’t really that good when I have better cakes around.

Ah, freshly made pancakes topped with a scoop for ice cream. Amazing ice cream they had there.. Not those generic type of ice cream.

Totally worth much more than the RM33.75 paid. Wonderful. Simply wonderful.
