Astro HD launching this Friday

Brace yourselves! bla bla bla~ publicity crap.

Astro HD is coming to Malaysia .. FINALLY. Hmm, if I’m not mistaken HD transmission has already been launched elsewhere around the world since urm.. 5 years ago? Wow.. finally we can have HD transmission here in Malaysia. Worse of all, it doesn’t come for free. Astro has been monopolizing the satellite tv rights here and bloodsucking more than a few million subscribers here with their somewhat below par services by packing more and more channels into its limited bandwidth which causes the poor image quality currently (around VCD quality) to be even worse.

However, this doesn’t really bring much impact to some users as they have already been enjoying HD contents via HDD media players. Hong Kong dramas in HD, TV series.. just to name a few.

I wonder where will they source the decoder from this time. Would it be transmitting at 1080p/i or just 720p? Anyway it doesn’t really matter as long you sit far enough from the screen and its not larger than 42″ . The difference would simply be unnoticable. Make sure it outputs as HDMI and not component outputs. Argh..

I bet Astro would hike up the price AGAIN for this HD “premium” service. They are experts in this field.. more because of them being the monopoly here. Not sure whether I would become one of them to get lured into this premium thing though =P.

The rain issue. Come on, get those tiny satellite dishes out and bring in larger ones! Screw those Ku band dishes. Didn’t you know Malaysia gets rain almost 3 times a week or more?

Anyway, this shall all be revealed this Friday. =)

Jaafar Mamak @ Bandar Sunway

Ah.. mamak food. Its been a while since I had my last roti canai. Somehow I do not fancy mamak food maybe because they are OILY and the stalls are hot. Anyway, this time I decided to give this shop a try since a few of my friends recommended it and I was hungry! No time to think of other shops. Btw, this shop does delivery too if you stay within Sunway area.

Site down

website-down-malaysia-host

You might have noticed that this site went down for several days recently. Don’t worry. Nothing happened, no hacking, no server crashing or what so ever. It was simply some terrible service provided by my cheap, yes I meant CHEAP in terms of service and reliability hosting provider which switched my server to another server without prior notice from them. My domain nameservers had to be reset and files had to be transferred from the old server. This happened when I was also away from my desktop which adds to the long downtime on this site. Rest assured that this site is not going down. It was just some poor hosting service provided from my web host. If you want to know which company it is so that you can avoid it? Just drop a comment here with your email and I shall reveal it.

Panasonic Lumix Workshop

About a week ago Panasonic Malaysia organized a workshop for its Lumix camera users and it was through their Facebook Fan page where the event was publicized. Each participant is charged RM50 and with it comes a Panasonic eco-bag , a ultra slow Class 2 4GB Panasonic SDHC card,  a RM20 Panasonic online voucher and a few tea breaks + lunch. Well, of course, someone to “teach” us how to take photographs better. I didn’t really find the “tutor” for this workshop useful as most of the stuff explained were pretty much basic stuff. Nevertheless, this was also another way for Panasonic to promote their micro four thirds camera range and also the lx-3.  So, got my hands itchy and forked out RM50 for this. I went with Reng Kwan as only both of us have a Lumix camera.

We were taken to the Butterfly park to have our photoshooting session with the butterflies as well as the “other” butterflies which were the winners of the Panasonic Model search or whatever its called. ngek ngek ngek.. Managed to take photo with 2 out of 3 of them but the photos are not with me currently =( .

Click on the thumbnails to have a better look at the photos I took with my FZ-18. Although I was provided with the Panasonic GH-1 to shoot with, I wasn’t used to it and opted to use my old faithful most of the time =).

We were then treated for lunch at Bangsar Seafood Village.. well we paid for it already.

Ahh and yes that’s me with the GH-1 =)

Journey up to Broga Hill, Semenyih

Okay, Eunice calls this insane, but I call this adventurous.

Few days ago, Reng Kwan, Sie Khai , Phaik Joo , Eunice and I walked our way up to Broga Hill with the intention to catch a glimpse of the sunrise at the highest location in Semenyih. Getting there early was the thing. Semenyih isn’t anywhere near Sunway and we had to get up early at around 4am ( I know many have went there even earlier) and it took us almost 45mins to arrive at the base of the hill. It was right opposite the rabbit farm =). Here’s a copy from what Eunice wrote from her blog. I’m too lazy to explain. I shall post mine with a few pictures instead.

Since yltan reminded me to bring torchlight and mosquito repellent, so i juz brought a small size one in order to lessen my burden along the track…err in fact i didnt know why we needed to bring those stuff hahahaha juz felt tht yltan was thinking too much…as wht we’ve planned, we reached the area around 6am but we were indeed scared to go down from the car and started trekking cuz it was just DARK! imagine the palm trees are all over and u’re gonna walk into the jungle without anyone around…anyway we made an attempt to support each other by asking ourselves to be more DARING….there i know that i should really appreciate yltan’s kind reminder! we walked extremely FAST and strived to be the first and fear to lag behind which i didnt und why we did that…perhaps we were afraid of those ‘brothers’ therefore the camera men din even dare to take pic at tht hour! it was not a joke to hike to the highest point without a halt cuz we looked like those asthma teenagers at the peak…poor phaik joo wanted to vomit somemore…however we didnt manage to see the sunrise as it was pretty cloudy this morning.

broga-darkness

As you can see, walking up in total darkness was cool especially when you are the only group going up! ngek ngek ngek.. Alright thats me closing my eyelids trying to avoid getting blinded by Sie Khai’s camera’s flash.

New RAM in the house =).

Today I managed to get hold of a pair of 2GB Corsair XMS2 1066mhz DDR2 modules at a quite reasonable price. Well, around 2x the price of my Corsair DDR2 800mhz Gaming ram. =P But then.. due to the recent spike in DDR2 ram price, the cost of getting this pair of 1066mhz modules are actually cheaper than to get the Corsair Gaming ram. Don’t ask me why. I just saw these lovely units selling at that price and I grabbed them.

xms2

I haven’t had the chance to test these ram modules yet as my desktop is currently away from my location. From reviews, it is said that this is a cheaper edition of the Corsair’s Dominator ram because the timings could be tightened to 5-5-5-15. But then as I said, I have yet to test it out so I can’t really conclude how good these modules are.

FREE 3 in 1 Coffee at Monash

OpenACircle : An online collaboration and workspace tool for small and medium businesses.

OpenACircle is a new a new online collaboration and workspace tool being targeted at small and medium businesses. I was offered to do a review on this so why not? Let’s give it a try. This online collaboration tool gave me an impression that it was going to become like Google Wave which most of you might have heard of. However, Google Wave is currently available only by invitation. So why wait for google?

OpenACircle runs on the Java platform which requires a Java JRE to run . It is readily available for free at Java’s site. To my disappointment, even though this software runs on Java, it doesn’t work on Macs.  Yes you read that correctly, no Macs.

Anyway, the registration process and usage went perfectly alright with my pc loaded with Windows 7.

A quick signup brought me to this dashboard which prompts me to create my business card details and to get my contacts into this circle by email invitation.

openacircle-welcome

Then it brings me to my dashboard.

openacircle-dashboard

A quick glance at the dashboard shows the calendar,  events, number of connections, the people currently online, number of circles.. etc and of course, a huge advertisement at the bottom right corner. Perhaps it is needed to fund their operating costs? I thought that ad was rather large and a smaller one would not be such an eyesore.

So what are the features included in OpenACircle? The name might have already gave you a hint on what it does. The publisher states that it allows people to interact with each other virtually, anywhere and of course, FREE (There is a paid plan too).

Well it does have features such as voice conferencing which allows up to 100 users at a time. Next up would be having able to share your workspace/desktop with the users you are connected with. This gives users the ease of being able to discuss on a specific matter without having to go through tedious ways.

There’s a file sharing feature implemented in OpenACircle also. Simply drag the file and share it with anyone who is in your circle. There are no limitations on the file type, so just share whatever you want in your circle.

When someone posts up a note on the circle, you’ll be immediately alerted via email and its up to you whether you want to respond to that person or not.

This online based software has pretty much everything that you need to be able to discuss and work out something with your partners. However for me currently I have yet to need such service as my basic Instant Messaging and Push Mail works perfectly alright. Nevertheless, one day if I do happen to need such service, I’ll be glad to use this software as it as almost everything (I think) that I would need.
