A bunch of routers with a WDS network deployment.

ddwrt-routers

A stack of Linksys WRT-54G’s flashed with dd-wrt firmware gets pwn-ed by a Buffalo WHR-HP-54G.

What are they for?

Okay here’s the plan. To set up a WDS network environment and also to establish a point to point connection from building A to building B which is located around 100m +/-  . All connections have to be able to access the shared hard disk drive and if possible, all under one SSID  .

Here’s a diagram of the 2 points from Google Earth’s view. Had to use it to check out the distance etc before starting the task.

Reng Kwan, George, Scott and I messed around with the routers for more than 5 hours and we managed to set up a WDS network within building A. However, once the router was brought apart(brought to the other building), the Linksys WRT54G routers with DDWRT Firmware could not manage to establish a connection. At that moment, we were pretty much frustrated because after so many hours, we simply couldn’t get a connection. I was much disappointed with the Linksys routers because it was only 100m distance apart with both juiced up to a 100mW of transmitting power, the connection could not work. Placed too much expectations on linksys ddwrts. If they had worked, I would not have to go to the site and configure the stuff again. Argh..

Fortunately, Reng Kwan reminded me to carry along my Buffalo WHR-HP-54G with DD-WRT and I tried to connect it to the network by replacing one of the routers and it worked. Now I would have to get a pair of these routers to replace the somehow weak linksys units to complete the job.

Well, yet another day I couldn’t complete the task. Still have to go to the site one last time. *hopefully*
